This is the work I shoot for myself. An ongoing record of London — the people, the light between buildings, the ordinary moments that stop being ordinary once they're held still. Nobody commissions it, which is exactly why it's the truest thing here.
Street photography is where the reflexes come from. Shooting strangers in unpredictable light with no second take teaches you to read a scene fast, anticipate a moment before it happens, and get exposure right without thinking about it.
Everything that makes event coverage work — moving through a room unnoticed, catching a reaction as it lands — was learned out here first, where nothing is arranged and nobody is waiting for you.
London gives you an enormous amount to work with. The light down a side street in winter, the density of people in a market, the way a whole neighbourhood's character changes across two stops on the same line.
I shoot across the whole city rather than one area, and the aim over time is a record that says something honest about what living here in this decade actually looked like.

The series moves around rather than settling in one place. Central for density and the way light falls between tall buildings, the markets — Brixton, Ridley Road, Whitechapel — for colour and people who aren't performing for a camera, the estates and high streets of outer London for the parts of the city that rarely get photographed, and the river at both ends of the day.
Shooting across the whole of Greater London rather than one fashionable postcode is deliberate. A record of London made entirely in Shoreditch isn't a record of London.

Across the whole city rather than one area. The aim is a record of London as a whole, so the work moves between central, east, south and north depending on what's happening and where the light is.
